Tuffy
Tuffy was a daily comic strip published by King Features Syndicate (Hearst) starting in 1939. Over the next decade, it appeared in more than 800 newspapers worldwide and, in 1949-1950, as a series of comic books issued by Standard Comics (Best Books, Inc.). Tuffy was about a little girl who did funny things and was one of the first in a long line of young, spirited female characters, which included Little Lulu, Nancy, Little Audrey, and Little Dot. Her well-meaning antics usually revolved around her family and her friend Jerry, all of whom cherished her despite the fact she was a constant source of aggravation. Tuffy lived with her mother, father and older sister, Tessy (who was named after Syd’s sister-in-law). Humorous themes centered around home and school.
Tuffy was declared essential for national morale during WWII. This classification kept Hoff out of active military during the war, although he joined the Office of War Information and drew propaganda cartoons which were dropped behind enemy lines.
