Online Exhibit
Syd Hoff…the Man, the Magic & the Mystery© focuses on the life and prolific career of the legendary gag cartoonist, illustrator and author of over 110 books for adults and children. The exhibit includes a variety of original images, text panels, and family photos. By exploring the diverse genres in which Hoff worked, the exhibit provides a deeper appreciation of who Syd was and where he drew inspiration from.
The Man…
Considered a gifted humorist and creative visionary who never lost connection to his humble beginnings – the roots of inspiration. He was considered a man for the people.
The Magic…
He had an ability to peek the curiosity and imagination of children with simple lines and whimsical characters, and with a down to earth yet sophisticated sense of humor, he was able to depict the struggles of everyday life without crossing the lines of decency.
The Mystery…
Deeply passionate to the plight of the underdog and with a great sensitivity to issues of class discrimination led Hoff to cartoon for a number of left-wing publications under the alias A. Redfield during the 1930s.
This exhibit has also been created as a traveling exhibit for interested libraries, museums and cultural centers.
